Meet Durkhanai

(she, her, hers)

Durkhanai is a mental health counseling intern who brings close to six years of experience providing therapy services. She has over 20 years of experience working with the Deaf, hard-of-hearing, and Deaf-Blind communities in Georgia. Currently, Durkhanai is pursuing an online graduate degree in Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling at Western Oregon University while working as a full-time Case Manager for the D/deaf, hard-of-hearing, and Deaf-Blind at a mental health agency.  Durkhanai is an Afghan American deaf female who grew up oral in a hearing family and the Afghan community. She learned about Deaf culture and American Sign Language while working for a non-profit Deaf organization early in her career, shortly after completing her Social Work undergraduate studies.  Her own personal experiences with stigmas and negative perceptions have instilled in her a desire to build positive, inclusive attitudes toward embracing our culturally diverse D/deaf, hard-of-hearing, and DeafBlind communities. She enjoys working with and learning from our wonderful, strong, diverse community.

Durkhanai is a Deaf therapist who goes by the pronouns she, her, hers and is fluent in American Sign Language.
