Meet Heather

(she, her, hers)

Dr. Heather Hunt is a Deaf licensed clinical psychologist and the founder of My Deaf Therapy™. Her private practice is the nation’s largest telehealth provider of mental health services tailored to the needs of Deaf, Deaf+, DeafBlind, Late Deafened, and Hard of Hearing individuals. Driven by her commitment to accessible, culturally competent care, Dr. Hunt established My Deaf Therapy ™ (MDT) to address the longstanding shortage of ASL-fluent mental health providers.

As CEO, Dr. Hunt spearheads the company's strategic growth, driving operational efficiency and ensuring the organization consistently supports its employees in advancing the company's mission to expand accessible mental health services to the deaf* community. She and her team engage in outreach efforts to promote appropriate, accessible mental health care for deaf individuals. This includes educating organizations on appropriate referrals for mental health services either within their local community or through virtual services such as those provided by MDT. They also provide workshops, presentations, and seminars to increase awareness, advocacy, and psychoeducation across mental health disciplines impacting the deaf community. Additionally, Dr. Hunt coordinates with organizations who share the vision of creating equitable access for deaf individuals inside and out of mental health fields. By advancing equity, they are facilitating improved overall mental wellness for the community.

As Clinical Director, Dr. Hunt oversees the clinical supervision and quality assurances of mental health services provided at MDT. This includes the organization’s internship training program and the team of supervisors who mentor their associate-level clinicians.  Deaf associate-level therapists often struggle to find sign language fluent, culturally knowledgeable supervisors as they aspire to become independent practitioners. Dr. Hunt recognizes the critical importance of providing this much-needed, accessible supervision.

MDT’s team of supervisors make it possible to exponentially increase the number of therapists available to the deaf community. They train graduate students to become associate-level therapists, who then gain supervised experience before transitioning to independent practice. Once they have established their own clinical expertise, these therapists then become supervisors themselves, repeating the cycle to address the shortage of mental health providers for deaf individuals.

My Deaf Therapy ™ provides accessible mental health services to individuals, couples, and families who communicate primarily through sign language. This includes those who are hearing and connected to a deaf person in a meaningful way such as a CoDA (child of deaf adults), KoDA (kid of deaf adults), interpreters, parents, peers, and significant others. MDT welcomes all clients, regardless of their specific hearing or communication needs.

*Inclusive of all. The use of the word deaf references the community’s diverse identity spectrum, including but not limited to Deaf, deaf, Hard of Hearing, DeafBlind, Deaf+, and Late Deafened.
